Description: This hand-sewn textile(wool) has a halyard rope. It is an American Red Cross flag which was flown on July 1, 1898 at the Battle of San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War. The flag is rectangular, 108 cm by 180cm. Dr. F Dewey Amner of Kent, Ohio donated this flag to the Ohio Historical Society (now the Ohio History Connection) in 1952. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This Imperial Chinese flag dates from 1890 to 1911. The wool flag depicts a blue five-toed dragon reaching for a red sun on a yellow rectangular field. The halyard edge is pink. An attached tag has been torn in half; the remaining portion reads "Lt. Gen CH / China / Re / 19." If complete, the tag would likely read "Lieutenant General Chaffee / China / Relief / 1900." Lieutenant General Adna Romanza Chaffee (1842-1914) acquired this flag during his service in the Boxer Rebellion. Alcott Farrar Elwell of East Hebron, New Hampshire, donated this flag to the Ohio Historical Society in 1962. From 1899-1901, the Chinese Society of Right and Harmonious Fists launched an uprising against foreign influences in China. Westerners referred to members of the society as "Boxers" because they practiced martial arts and calisthenics. Targets of the Boxers' violence were foreign builders, diplomats and Christians, both foreign and Chinese. The United States and other countries with interests in China sent troops to rescue their citizens who were under siege in the legation compound of Beijing (then Peking). This international force, known in the United States as the China Relief Expedition, suppressed the rebellion and imposed reparations on China. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Infantry flag painted by Robert Needham in the 1960s. Silk flag of the national colors served as the camp colors of the 45th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The flag in this painting was manufactured in the United States between 1863 and 1865 as separate front and back pieces that were sewn together. The 45th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was organized at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio and mustered into service on August 19, 1862. The regiment took part in the siege of Knoxville, the Atlanta Campaign, and the battles of Franklin and Nashville. The regiment was mustered out at Camp Harker, Tennessee, on June 15, 1865. Ohio battle flags were on display at the Ohio Statehouse until the 1960s, when the state formed a committee to oversee the efforts to restore the fragile flags. Some of the battle flags were on display on the Plaza Level of the Ohio Historical Society from 1970 until 1989. For conservation reasons, the flags have been in storage since 1989. The flag was manufactured in the United States between 1861 and 1863. There are 34 painted stars arranged in concentric circles with an additional star in each of the blue canton's four corners. The flag has thirteen alternating red and white stripes. The original flag measured 64 by 80 cm. The 40th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was organized at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio, and mustered into service on December 7, 1861. Major engagements in which the regiment took part include Middle Creek, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, Mission Ridge, the Atlanta Campaign, and Franklin. On December 10, 1864, after the battle of Franklin, the regiment was consolidated with the 51st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Ohio battle flags were on display at the Ohio Statehouse until the 1960s, when the state formed a committee to oversee the efforts to restore the fragile flags. Some of the battle flags were on display on the Plaza Level of the Ohio Historical Society from 1970 until 1989. For conservation reasons, the flags have been in storage since 1989. In the 1960s, the collection was photographed and commercial artist Robert Needham painted illustrations of many Civil War flags. Description: This flag hung at the Campus Martius Museum in honor of five employees serving in the Second World War: William R. Willison, Samuel P. Tobias, Robert L. Cole, Lewis B. Anderson, and Norman G. Wolfe. The In Service Flag (Blue Star Banner) was patented by an Ohioan, Colonel Robert L. Queisser of East Cleveland, Ohio, on 6 November 1917. Intended for display by families who have members serving in the Armed Forces, blue star banners are displayed in shop windows to honor the members of that organization who were serving. Most flags were homemade by mothers, though they later became mass-produced. Upon death in service the blue star was replaced by a gold one. One of the most famous flags was that of the five Sullivan brothers who all perished on the U.S.S. Juneau. Card with flag reads "United States Army 2d World War/William R. Willison/Samuel P. Description: This (slightly stained) cotton square flag has a white field with a red square charge. It measures 120 by 120 cm. Army surgeon Albert J. Myer standardized signal communication with his early 1860s publication "A Manual of Signals For The Use of Signal Officers In The Field". The Myer Wig-wag system and associated codes were used by both Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War. Soldiers received signal kits containing three flags of this design in differing sizes: 2x2, 4x4, 6x6 ft. Among other tools in these kits, there also were two other signal flags; a 4x4 black field with a white square, and a 4x4 red field with a white square. Sequences of three basic movements (right motion, left motion, and front) comprised Myer's communication system. Wig-wag became the first Union Navy Joint Signal Code (between the Union Army and Navy) until the turn of the century. This artifact acquired by the Ohio History Connection between 1900 and 1950. Description: The fabric is a natural background with appliqued buckeye branch, leaves and nuts centered on front side. There is lettering "Ohio Women" on the front and the reverse side is solid green with brown fabric sleeve at the top with wooden a slat and wire hanging apparatus/velcro fasteners. On the bottom the case is made of green cotton twill with metal zipper and reinforced circular ends. The appliques are machine sewn. This banner was used in 1980 at "Women's Recognition Day", a part of the Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame, established in 1978 by the Women's Division of the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services.
